Thor Odinson is a superhero featured in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, inspired by the Norse god Thor (Þórr) from ancient mythology. The character was created by artist Jack Kirby, writer Stan Lee, and scripter Larry Lieber, making his debut in Journey into Mystery #83 in 1962. Thor received his own standalone title starting with Thor #126 in 1966. Rooted in Norse myth, Marvel’s Thor retains many traits of the original deity, with several elements of his character drawn directly from the legends.
A powerful Asgardian and the son of King Odin, Thor possesses superhuman strength, long life, and the ability to command the weather—especially thunder and lightning. His iconic weapon, the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, not only amplifies his powers but also grants him the ability to fly. Originally introduced through the human guise of Dr. Donald Blake—a narrative later revealed to be a ruse created by Odin—Thor has since taken on various mortal identities and, at times, ruled Asgard as its king. His story has spanned numerous comic volumes since his first appearance, solidifying him as one of Marvel’s most enduring heroes.
